  27. Sorry, I misread your earlier post. Might I suggest getting a cheap PC and
  28. sticking a PVR in it? I used mine quite successfully in a 75 MHz Pentium
  29. system for several weeks before I switched it to DEC Alpha. Just make sure
  30. you get a system with three or four PCI slots, plus a few ISA slots. Many on
  31. the market only have one or two (not advisable). Also, two of those PCI
  32. slots should be able to take a full-length card, without obstruction by the
  33. CPU fan. I got a complete Pentium system from CompUSA last summer for less
  34. than $1,500 (house brand). It's just a typical consumer machine, but with
  35. the PVR doing most of the work, that's not a problem. I expect you can get a
  36. 90 MHz system now for the same money. The only additional expense should be
  37. an Ethernet card, and those can be had for less than $100. With a PVR and
  38. suitable drive thrown in, total system cost may be around $4,000 (unless you
  39. get a used PC). Nothing on the SGI will be able to match its output for
  40. anywhere near that price.

  42. A rock-bottom route may be to get a used Amiga and PAR, but this approach
  43. may cause more problems than it solves in the long run (I'm sure a whole
  44. bunch of Amiga users will be highly displeased with that opinion. Hey, I own
  45. three of them). Spend the negligible extra bucks and get a PVR. The quality
  46. is worth it. Also, given the exclusive nature of SGI's, I would want an
  47. add-on system that more easily permits you to talk to the rest of the world.
  48. PC's happen to be great for that. I no longer have to get into long
  49. explanations with some service bureau idiot when I'm forced to drop the name
  50. "Amiga".
